Service Description

Looking back on our past to learn from it moving forward. "Sankofa" is a West African term from the Akan language of Ghana meaning "Go Back and Fetch it." This series of segmented engagement are roughly 30 minute sessions as described below. 1. Anasi Stories Using strategies of theatre, puppetry, and audience participation, we will engage the children in learning of West African Folklore and Storytelling. This is very relevant for Cariwest as iterations of these folk tales have traveled throughout the world, including the Caribbean. The session will teach a bit about the history of Anansi, the trickster spider, and end with an interactive presentation of Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock. 2. Games Children will engage their gross motor and coordination skills by learning about and participating in multiple games from Ghana. Games may include Kye Kye Kule and Crow Crow Crow, Antwe Twe, and Ampe. All of these games involve full body movement, sometimes getting down on the floor. 3. Carnival Mas Learn about the history of Carnival through as you craft head piece and engage in song and dance.
